LG ice maker repair

A tilted tray in an LG ice maker is not always stuck. On one LG design the tray tips about an hour after it fills, so cold air reaches the water. Only a long tilt means trouble.

When LG Craft Ice stops dropping spheres

LG's Canadian help library says some Craft Ice makers have had problems. When the round ice will not drop into the bin, LG traces it to the heater that loosens each sphere, and a ThinQ app software update lengthens that heater cycle. A Craft Ice maker that does nothing at all is worse: LG links it to a faulty motor connection, which means replacing the whole unit, and says warranty periods were extended for the issue. A mold frozen solid thaws with the fridge unplugged and the freezer door open for 1 to 2 hours.

Running the LG ice maker test

1

Prepare

Open the ice room, take the bucket out and lay a towel underneath. The tray holds only about four or five ounces of water.

2

Press

Keep the test button down about three seconds until the maker rotates. Tray-less units need a paper clip pushed into the button hole.

3

Read it

Two answers matter: did the motor turn, and did water or ice show in the tray. A no to either one points to service.

4

Repeat

On the tray-less design the test runs once in the first two hours after plugging in. Unplug about 30 seconds to run it again.

Tests and resets

On most LG trays it tips about 5 minutes before harvest; past 30 minutes without dropping ice, reset it.
Remove the bin and give the ice maker a couple of firm but gentle shakes up and down. Refit the bin and cut power for 30 seconds by unplugging or using the breaker. If it still has not made or dropped ice 4 to 6 hours later, LG treats it as a repair.
The tray is overfilling, and LG ties that to water pressure. Too low and the valve may not snap shut, so it drips. Too high and it fills past the line. On CustomCube models a size selector set too high does the same.
LG recommends -4°F (-20°C) or colder, and the freezer must hold below 19°F for any ice at all. For Craft Ice it gives -4°F to 0°F. A warmer setting still makes ice, just slower.
Air is trapped in the line, and LG says to run about 2.5 gallons (9.5 liters) through the dispenser to purge it.

Ice quality and Craft Ice

LG allows 12 hours to two days for the first batch, since the fridge cools its compartments and food before it starts on ice. Filling the bin takes two to three days. Turn the ice maker on at the start, then wait.
Handle forward, seated in the grooves under the upper drawer. A bin out of place is one cause LG gives for a Craft Ice model that seems to make no ice, and nothing but ice should go in it.
It depends on the model. The LRYKS3106 lists 3 or 6 spheres a day with room for 27, while the LRRXC2606S lists 0.7 lbs a day with 4.0 lbs of storage.
On the LRYKS3106 and LRRXC2606S sheets the ice maker falls under the 1 year parts and labor term; the longer terms cover the sealed system and compressor.
Hold the Ice On/Off key on the panel for 3-5 seconds until ICE ON lights. If the panel is locked, hold Lock for three seconds first.
