Wash, drain, dry

Dishwasher repair from fill to dry

Many dishwashers expect hot water arriving at 120 to 150 degrees F and cannot heat a cold supply up to washing temperature. Dirty plates can start at the water heater. Standing water, leaks and dead panels start in the machine.

Does Honolulu water affect dishwashers?

Mildly, yes. A USGS summary of Hawaii ground water from 1969 to 1985 found public supplies generally below 120 mg/L of hardness, the top of the moderately hard band, with about 95 percent of the state's people drinking ground water. Those aquifers are volcanic and carry silica too, a median above 30 mg/L. Heated hard water leaves calcium carbonate scale, and spotty or cloudy glassware is the usual sign. On Oahu that points to a descaling cycle a few times a year rather than a softener. A leak under a counter is the bigger island risk: in a humid home or a stacked condo, water that sits turns into mold.

How a dishwasher call goes

1

Describe it

Brand and model from the tag on the tub edge or door frame, any error code, and where the water shows, if it does.

2

Trace it

Filter, sump and drain path first, including the high loop and the disposal, then the pump, inlet valve, float and latch. Written estimate before work.

3

Repair

Parts not on hand may come from the mainland to Honolulu by ship or air, and the estimate says if a second trip is needed.

4

Full cycle

A full wash runs with the cabinet open below, so the fill, drain and seals are seen working before the toe kick goes back on.

How we work

What a careful dishwasher repair includes

In Honolulu kitchens, as anywhere, dishwashers fail at the edges of the cycle more than in the middle: the fill, the drain and the door. Most standing-water calls end at a packed filter or a sump full of labels and seeds, and the owner can clear those. When the pump hums without moving water, or the latch will not hold, it is parts work. The checks in order are on dishwasher not draining, and the monthly habits are on appliance maintenance.

Which dishwasher problems need a visit?

These six need a visit once the filter is clean and the right detergent is in. Each one points at a part or a fitting rather than a habit.

Pump hums, water stays

A stuck impeller, often with glass or a seed jammed in it. Grinding means glass is still in there.

Overfills the tub

A float that sticks or an inlet valve that will not close. Both can flood the floor.

Door pops open

A clogged vent builds steam pressure mid-cycle and pushes the door open.

Will not start

A broken latch or lock, or a touchpad that stopped responding. Latch work is a professional job.

Racks come out wet

Empty rinse aid, a cool supply, or a heater that no longer reaches temperature.

Leak code with no puddle

Some models show a leak code when moisture reaches the base sensor, even with no visible water.

The six machines island kitchens and laundry rooms lean on hardest, each with its own page on causes, parts and cost.

01

Wash results

It is either mineral film or etching. Wipe a glass with lemon juice or white vinegar: if the film comes off, it is mineral and descaling helps. If not, the glass is etched, which is permanent and comes from too much detergent, overly hot water or over-softened water.
A little is normal after drying, but water up near the door points to a severe block or a pump that is not running.
On models with a temperature sensor, supply water under 140 degrees F makes the control stretch the main wash and heat the water to at least 132 degrees F. That can add 15 to 20 minutes. Run the kitchen tap hot before starting, and avoid starting right after showers.
Yes, since a unit hooked to the cold line washes poorly and many cannot heat a cold supply up to washing temperature.
No. Bail the water out, a turkey baster reaches the sump, then clean the filter and look in the sump for labels, seeds, toothpicks or glass.

Booking and life span

Yes. In a stacked building a dishwasher leak can travel to the unit below, so shut the valve under the sink and wipe up what you can. Our condo appliance repair page covers building access.
DOE estimates an average of 15.2 years. A pump, valve or latch repair on a younger machine usually makes sense; past that age, a tub crack or a failed control board is often the point to compare a new unit, and our repair or replace guide lays out how.
Cleaning the filter, clearing spray arm holes with a toothpick, topping up rinse aid, leveling, and checking the high loop under the sink. Latches, pumps, inlet valves and heaters are technician work.
Yes, along with Honolulu and the rest of Oahu; mention your area when you book.
A new door gasket can need several full cycles to seat. If it still leaks after that, check that the unit is level and that the control panel edge is not rubbing a neighboring cabinet.
