Maytag dishwasher repair that starts with the tub

Maytag's first big dishwasher recall came in 1995: 553,000 units built March 1994 to January 1995 had a base component that could overheat. Their serial sat in the upper left corner of the tub, just under the countertop.

Heating element

How to tell if a Maytag is really heating

1

Pick Sanitize

Run a normal load with the Sanitize option on. A steady Sanitize light at the end means the element reached full temperature.

2

Watch the light

A blinking Sanitize light means the cycle never got hot enough. With hot water confirmed, the element or its control is suspect.

3

No Sanitize?

Run the 1-hour wash with Heat Dry selected. The whole cycle should last about 1.5 hours, and the dishes should come out warm.

4

Then call

Cold dishes, a tripping breaker or an error code means we test the element, its wiring and the control board on site.

Filter styles

Does every Maytag dishwasher have a filter to clean?

No. Many Maytag models use a two-part filter you remove with a quarter turn and rinse about once a month. Some have a maintenance-free system instead, with no routine cleaning. On those, a foreign object cup at the front, under the lower rack, keeps olive pits and glass out of the pump. Press the tab in its center, lift it, empty it and push it back until it locks. Models with a Clean Filter light reset after you hold that button for 3 seconds and then open and close the door.

01

Codes and symptoms

Maytag ties it to the diverter valve. Cut power for 30 seconds and restart; a repeat code needs a repair.
No. Open the supply valve fully and straighten the hose, then press Start. The dishwasher tries to fill again and carries on from where it stopped.
Units made March 1994 through January 1995 whose serial ended in one of eleven listed letter pairs, most of them starting with K. Maytag said the failures mostly showed up within eight months of installation, so any unit still running today has lasted far past that window. Read the serial in the upper left corner of the tub to check.
Read the tag inside the tub near the left of the door opening. Units sold February 2006 through April 2010 with serials starting NW39 to NW52 or NY01 to NY19, or ending in listed pairs such as JC, LA or NA, were included. Maytag had 12 reports of element failures that caused fires, so stop using a listed unit and switch off its breaker.
Plastic does not hold heat like glass, so it keeps droplets. Maytag puts cups and bowls in the third-level rack, never the bottom rack.
02

Recalls, drying and care

For a full load, yes; it adds 15 minutes beyond the default Heat or Pro Dry.
Maytag suggests running the kitchen faucet hot for 30 to 60 seconds so the first fill is already warm. The supply should reach 120°F, and Eco or Quick cycles cut both heat and dry time, which shows up as wet dishes.
No. Maytag warns against drain-opening chemicals in the tub; they can damage parts. Bail the water out, clean the filters and check the hose for a proper high loop or a clear air gap instead.
On a double drawer model it is on the right side of the top drawer. A standard built-in carries it on the left side of the tub frame.
Usually the control module. Maytag's step is a 30 second power cycle at the plug or breaker, and service if the code returns.
