Sub-Zero ice

Sub-Zero ice maker repair on Oahu

On Designer models, a Sub-Zero ice maker turns itself off after 20 cycles in which no door or drawer was opened. That looks like a failure and is not one. We sort the real faults from the built-in ones in Oahu homes.

Why has my Sub-Zero stopped making ice?

A Sub-Zero that has stopped making ice usually has a freezer that is not cold enough, a raised shut-off arm, or a crooked bin. The freezer should read 5°F or colder, and the maker recommends 0°F. The arm moves only about an inch, must be down, and needs its white plastic rudder attached. On some models the bin presses a switch, so a bin pushed in at an angle halts production. If all three look right, the general causes on our no-ice page come next.

Classic reset

The flashing cube, step by step

1

Hold ALARM

On a Classic unit, press and hold ALARM for 15 seconds. The display reads CFC when the reset has taken.

2

Two keys

Cube still flashing? Hold Max Ice and Ice Maker together for 5 seconds. That is the second documented reset.

3

Watch it

Give the freezer time. Ice only forms and drops once the compartment is back at temperature, which on a cold start takes up to a day.

4

Book it

If the cube icon keeps coming back after both resets, Sub-Zero treats it as a repair visit, and so do we.

Three Sub-Zero ice makers, three sets of quirks

The same no-ice complaint means different things on a Classic, a Designer and an undercounter unit. Match your model prefix first.

LineModel prefixesWhat is differentWhat you can checkWhen to book

New or reset units

Allow 24 hours after the unit and the ice maker are switched on, because the freezer has to reach temperature before cubes form and drop.
Yes, on Classic units toss the first few batches, since new plumbing can leave impurities in the water.
Max Ice pushes output up by as much as 30% for 24 hours on Classic units, and some parts run faster during that window. A change in sound while it is on is expected. If the noise carries on after the 24 hours end, mention it when you call.
Probably not. A Classic waits three minutes after the bin comes out before it ejects cubes again, and on some models the bin itself presses a switch. Slide it back in square and give it a few minutes.
It is a flow meter fault on Classic BI units: no water flow detected. Check that supply pressure is in range and switch the breaker off for 30 seconds.

Water and parts

Sub-Zero ties small or hollow cubes to low water pressure. If the house runs on reverse osmosis or well water, the maker suggests adding a pressure booster or a regulator. A filter past its life can also cut the flow, so check its age before anything else, then book a visit if pressure tests fine.
Typically every 6 to 12 months, according to Sub-Zero.
Its bin is not refrigerated, so warm rooms and direct sun melt what is stored. Keep it out of the afternoon light, and clean and sanitize it on a schedule, as the maker asks.
Yes. Sub-Zero lists a water valve that stays energized for more than fifteen seconds as one cause of no ice. Testing that needs the unit opened and a meter on the valve, so it is a job for the visit, not an owner check.
Not if it went 20 cycles with every door and drawer closed, since that auto-off is designed in.
