Washer not spinning: lid, load or drive
On a GE front-loader, a detergent drawer left open is enough to stop the spin. Shut it, and on a top-loader check the lid, before you assume the motor is gone. Then work through what a Honolulu technician rules out.

Why won't my washer spin?
Most washers that refuse to spin are protecting themselves rather than broken. A top-loader will not spin with the lid up, and on GE front-loaders an open detergent drawer blocks it. An uneven load comes next: the machine refills and rocks slowly to fix the balance, then stops with an error if it cannot, so spread the load and run Drain and Spin. Settings are third. Low Spin, No Spin, bulky items on a Normal cycle, or a late pause to add a garment all hold the speed down. If the water pumps out and you can hear the motor but the basket stays still, the drive has failed and a technician needs to see it.
What is stopping the spin?
| Cause | How you can tell | Owner check or technician job |
|---|---|---|
| Lid or drawer open | Top-loader lid up, or front-load detergent drawer not fully shut | Owner check: close it and restart the spin |
| Lid switch parts missing | Older GE top-loader neither agitates nor spins; probe or magnet on the lid broken | Technician job: the switch never closes without them |
| Uneven or tiny load | Refills, rocks slowly, then shows an error; or a very small front-load load | Owner check: redistribute and run Drain and Spin |
| Spin setting | Low Spin or No Spin chosen, bulky items on Normal, or a late Add a Garment pause | Owner check: change the setting or cycle |
| No power at the outlet | Panel dead or resets mid-cycle | Owner check: plug a lamp or hair dryer into the same outlet |
| Motor fault or failed drive | Tub empties, motor runs, basket still; or the Options knob no longer beeps | Technician job, after the GE reset where it applies |

Display codes behind a stalled spin
The display usually says why the spin is held back. Most of these six codes point to the load, suds or a pause, not the motor.
Ur on Samsung
Ur means the machine is adding water and rebalancing, a retry rather than a fault. UE or Ub means it gave up.
F7 E1
On Maytag and Amana front-loaders the motor could not reach speed. Leftover shipping bolts and overloading are the first checks.
Sud or Sd
Maytag stops tumbling to add rinse water, sometimes several times, to break suds. A restricted drain hose or standpipe can cause it too.
Cb calibration
A Maytag rocking its drum both ways for 1 to 3 minutes is relearning the load weight. Let it finish.
UE or dE on GE
GE top-loaders show UE for an unbalanced load and dE for an open lid. Either one holds the basket still.
Int on Amana
Int marks a paused or canceled cycle. Stopping and draining can take 20 to 30 minutes, which looks like a dead spin.
Four checks before any part is ordered
Symptom
When you book a Honolulu visit: does it drain, does the motor run, does the lid lock click? Those answers, the model number and the spin setting narrow it fast.
Lid and lock
The lid switch or door lock is tested. On older top-loaders the probe or magnet on the lid is checked, since a missing one stops both agitate and spin.
Power
Outlet voltage, error codes and the control are checked, and the GE motor reset is tried where it fits, before anything is condemned.
Drive
If the motor runs but the basket will not turn, the drive parts are inspected and replaced with parts matched to the model, then a full spin is run.
