Whirlpool top loaders

Whirlpool washer repair, starting with the code

When a Whirlpool top loader stops sensing incoming water, some models start an 8 to 10 minute drain routine and ignore every button until it ends. We read that code, and the rest of the Whirlpool table, before we touch a part.

Fill problems

What does F8 E1 mean on a Whirlpool?

F8 E1, also shown as LF or Lo FL, means the washer is not sensing the water it expected during fill. Whirlpool wants both hot and cold supplies connected, and it warns that anti-flood devices can cut pressure and volume. The drain side matters too. If more than 4.5 inches of hose sits inside the standpipe, or the hose is taped in, it can siphon, so the tub fills and drains at the same time. The hose needs an air gap, and the top of the drain must stand at least 39 inches off the floor.

Island tap water and the inlet screens

A USGS survey of Hawaii public supplies found hardness generally below 120 mg/L, soft to moderately hard, and those figures are decades old. Even so, minerals build up. Whirlpool says scale can clog the small screens on the back of the inlet valve and that they should be brushed clean where they sit, not pulled out. Damp air keeps a closed tub wet too, so we check the hoses, screens and drain setup together.

Codes and sounds

OL means overload: the washer drains and waits for you to take some items out before it carries on.
No, a lid left open for more than 10 minutes resets the cycle and drains the tub by design.
HC tells you the hot and cold hoses are connected to the wrong inlets. It appears when the cycle finishes, so the load still washes, but at the wrong temperatures. Swapping the two hoses at the back of the washer clears it.
A single clunk as the drive shifts from agitate to spin is normal, Whirlpool says. Grinding, banging through the whole spin, or a basket that never turns is different and worth a visit.
No. It is a reminder. Whirlpool suggests running Clean Washer about once a month, or when that light comes on, with one affresh tablet in an empty basket. A model without that cycle can use the highest water level and the hottest setting instead. In Oahu's damp air, leaving the lid up afterward helps the tub dry out.

Care and booking

Raise the lid and look along the tub rim; the tag sits there, under the lid.
Yes. Front loaders use their own code list and door lock, so our washer repair page covers them alongside other brands.
No. The control ignores input until the routine finishes. Let it end, open both faucets fully, check that no anti-flood fitting sits on the line, and start again. If the code returns on the next fill, the inlet valve or its screens need a closer look, which is a job for a visit.
It depends on which part failed and what a new washer costs here, and our repair or replace guide weighs both.
Yes, both, plus the rest of the island. See our Kaneohe and Waipahu pages for what we see in each area's homes.
