GE washer and washing machine repair

When certain GE help messages scroll, the washer freezes its controls for 4 minutes. Unplugging it does not skip the wait. It starts the 4 minute timer over, so leave it powered and let it run out.

What a GE washer display is saying

GE puts short codes on the display, and most point to something you can check. Six come up on most calls. Leaking, draining and spinning faults shared by every brand have their own pages, linked further down.

dE

The lid is open. Lift it and close it again firmly, then press Start once more.

UE

The load is unbalanced. Spread heavy or bunched items evenly around the basket, then restart.

FE

Water has reached a critical level. GE says to shut off the water and cut the power.

H2O SUPPLY or IE

No water is coming in. Both supply valves should be open and the hoses free of kinks.

Lid

Shows after 3 cycles in a row without the lid being opened. Open and close it once.

Locked during fill

Top loaders from 2015 on lock the lid while sensing the load, and Precise Fill models during fill too.

Closet installs

How much room a GE top loader asks for

Less than most. The GTW manual allows 0 inches at the sides, 2 inches in front and 3 inches behind, with 60 inches of height for the lid. A closet door needs 60 square inches of vent area, or 120 when a dryer shares the space. The standpipe has to be at least 1-1/2 inches inside diameter and open to air. Where the drain sits 60 to 96 inches up, GE suggests a drain hose extension.

Three GE washer recalls worth checking first

A recalled washer gets its remedy from the maker. These are the GE washer recalls in CPSC records, with the dates that tell you whether yours might qualify.

Care and setup

At least once a month or about every 40 washes. Put 1 cup of bleach, vinegar or washer cleaner into the empty drum and start the cycle.
About 90 minutes, so start it when you will not need the machine for a while.
On current GTW top loaders the model and serial tag sits under the lid, out of sight until you lift it.
On some models, yes. The GTW manual gives one year on any part with labor, then adds a ten-year motor term on the GTW485, GTW538 and similar models, part only after year one. The GTW525 carries five years on any part. Check the model on the tag before assuming the longer term applies, and keep the proof of purchase with the manual.
It might be if it is a high-efficiency model sold between 2003 and 2011. About 222,000 were recalled in September 2016 because an electrical part could overheat.

Coverage and recalls

GE gives two sets of numbers. The GTW top-load manual asks for 20 to 120 psi held while both valves are filling. GE's water pressure support article lists 20 to 150 psi for top loaders and 10 to 120 psi for front loaders. For a GTW machine we work from the manual, since it is the stricter of the two.
Its manual calls for hot water between 120°F and 150°F at the valve.
Top loaders from 2015 on lock while sensing the load. That is normal and releases on its own.
No. FE means water has reached a critical level. Turn off the water supply, cut the power, and keep towels nearby until the machine has been looked at.
Two GE front-load recalls exist. In June 2010 about 181,000 GE front loaders built between December 2006 and February 2010 were recalled for a wire that could break and touch the tub. In October 2012 about 62,000 GE Profile front loaders, models WPDH8800, WPDH8900 and WPDH8910, were recalled because the basket could separate and break the top panel.
