Drum stalled

Dryer not spinning: load, power or belt

A drum packed with soaked towels or jeans can be heavy enough to make the belt slip, so the motor runs and the drum barely moves. Take a few pieces out and restart before you book a Honolulu repair.

Short answer

Why won't my dryer drum turn?

Check the load and the button before the parts. A heavy wet load of towels or jeans can make the belt slip, so lighten it and restart. Many dryers want Start held for two to five seconds, and a quick tap does nothing. Power is next. An electric dryer needs 240 volts through two breakers, so reset both, and a cord with loose terminal screws can starve it. A GE dryer from 2019 or later may need a one-time setting, 1 for electric or 2 for gas, before it will tumble. Then unplug it and turn the drum by hand. If it spins with no resistance at all, the belt is broken or off, and that is technician work.

On the visit

How does a technician find why the drum stalls?

1

What you heard

Does the motor run with the drum still, or is everything silent? That answer, the load size and the model number shape the Honolulu visit before a tool comes out.

2

Supply

Voltage at the outlet and the cord connection are checked. On electric models both legs must be live, and loose terminal screws get tightened or the cord replaced.

3

Hand turn

Unplugged, the drum is turned by hand. Free spinning sends the check to the belt; a drum that drags or grinds sends it to the rollers, slides and rear bearing.

4

Rebuild

A new belt goes on, worn supports are replaced with it, and a full load is dried so the drum is proven to turn under weight before the technician leaves your Honolulu home.

When a still drum is doing its job

Not every motionless drum is broken. Several dryers park the drum on purpose after a cycle or when a tank fills. Two of these six mean real wear, and the makers say which.

LG Wrinkle Care

After the cycle the drum turns for 10 seconds every six minutes, for up to three hours. Long pauses are normal.

Kenmore Wrinkle Guard

The load tumbles on and off for up to 90 minutes once drying ends, so the drum often sits still between turns.

Condenser tank full

A Fisher & Paykel condenser dryer with a full tank cools for a few minutes, then pauses and beeps. Empty it every load.

Miele drain message

On a Miele heat-pump dryer, a request to empty the container or check the drain means a full tank or a kinked hose.

Samsung 3C

Samsung lists 3C as a motor error. Unlike the cases above, this one is a real fault for a technician.

Thump after a rest

Maytag says rollers can flatten while a dryer sits unused and thump for a few minutes. Grinding that never fades means wear.

Drum stopped

Most often the belt. Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand; if it spins freely, GE says the belt is broken or loose.
Whirlpool says to hold Start for two to five seconds, since a quick tap may not register.
GE dryers made in 2019 and later can need a one-time personality setting before they will run or tumble: 1 for an electric model, 2 for a gas one. It usually comes up after installation or a control replacement, and the steps are in GE's support pages for the model.
Yes. GE names a heavy wet load of towels or jeans as a cause of belt slip, and USFA estimates a full wet load holds up to 1.5 gallons of water. Spin it longer in the washer, split it in two, and see if the drum moves.
Yes, once the dryer is unplugged; that hand turn is GE's own belt test.

Parts and power

Largely. A gas dryer runs on one breaker instead of two, but the belt, rollers, slides and bearing that carry the drum are the same kind of parts. The checks for load, Start and belt apply to both. With any gas model in a Honolulu home, a smell like rotten eggs means leave the house and call the gas supplier from outside.
Often. GE treats the belt, drum bearing, drum slides and felt as one replacement job, so worn supports found during a belt repair are usually done in the same visit.
It can. Many appliance parts reach Oahu by ship or air from mainland warehouses, so a Honolulu technician confirms the exact part number first. Common belts may be on hand; less common drum parts may need to be ordered.
On an electric dryer, the most common kind in Honolulu, yes. It draws power through two breakers, one leg feeding the motor and the other the heating element. Switch both fully off, then back on, before you assume a broken part.
When the load is light, Start was held, both breakers are on and the drum still sits still or spins loose by hand. That means a belt or drum support inside the cabinet, which a Honolulu technician replaces with the cabinet open and the power off.
