Whirlpool dryer repair
On certain Whirlpool dryers, the Check Vent light is set in the sensing phase at the start of an automatic cycle. Once lit, it stays on for that whole load. Clearing the vent mid-cycle will not turn it off.

Whirlpool dryer codes and the reset each one gets
Whirlpool publishes a reset for each of these codes, though for some it gives only the steps and not the meaning. Do the reset once before booking.
| Code | Points to | Owner step | If it returns | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AF or Check Vent | Restricted airflow: clogged screen, kinked or crushed vent, too many elbows | Touch any key to clear; the dryer keeps running | Clean the full vent run and the hood | Weak or no heat |
| F1E3, F1E5 | The control unit or its wiring | Note the code and the model number | Control or harness repair | Dryer will not start |
| E1, E2, E3 | Whirlpool lists the reset, not the meaning | Breaker off 5 minutes, then a timed dry test | Technician diagnosis | Dryer repair overview |
| FC E1, F9 E2 | Reset steps only on Whirlpool's pages | Breaker off 1 minute | Technician diagnosis | Dryer repair overview |
What vent does a Whirlpool dryer need?
A Whirlpool needs 4-inch heavy metal vent, rigid or flexible metal, and never foil or plastic. The hood outside should sit at least 12 inches (305 mm) above the ground or anything below it, so a planter or deck under the hood counts. Whirlpool wants the duct cleaned every 1 to 2 years, or sooner once loads dry slower. Runs longer than its installation chart allows shorten the dryer's life and use more power. With Hawaii electricity priced as it is, that second part costs more here.

Whirlpool electric versus gas dryers
| Item | Electric model | Gas model |
|---|---|---|
| Supply | 240 volts on a separate 30-amp circuit with two breakers | Gas through a shutoff valve at the pipe |
| Drum turns, air stays cold | One breaker tripped: one feeds the motor, one the element | Shutoff closed; it is open when the handle lines up with the pipe |
| Sounds that are normal | No gas valve, so no clicking from one | The valve clicking several times a cycle, and a whoosh at ignition |
| Back panel | Steam water inlet on the right, on steam models | Gas on the left, steam inlet on the right |
| 2002 Thin Twin recall | Electric versions were not included | LTG5243D series combos sold January 2000 to May 2002 |
