Dryer won't start? Check the door first

Some Whirlpool dryers carry two door latches, one high and one low, and both have to catch before the drum will run. A sleeve pinched in the seal can hold the door open just enough. It takes seconds to check in any Honolulu laundry room.

Short answer

Why won't my dryer turn on?

A dryer that will not start is usually waiting on the door, the power or the panel. The door can look closed without latching, some Whirlpool models need an upper and a lower latch to catch, and a caught sleeve can hold it open. Power comes next. An electric dryer runs on two fuses or breakers and a gas dryer on one, and both kinds expect a circuit of their own. Then the panel. Touch controls misread wet fingers, Wrinkle Reduction chosen alone may never begin, and Control Lock blocks every button until you hold Cycle Signal for three seconds on most Whirlpool models. A scorched door switch or a burned cord is technician work.

What it runs on

Electric, gas or compact: what each needs to start

Start problems differ with the power a dryer uses. Find your type, then check the supply side before you suspect the controls.

Messages that make a dryer look dead

A dryer that refuses to run often shows a short code first. Read it before you book. These six come from the makers' own help pages, and most clear without a part.

dE on an LG

The door is not fully shut, often because the lint filter is not pushed all the way in. F0 means the filter is out.

PF after an outage

LG shows PF after a power cut. Cut power, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power.

dn on a Samsung

A firmware download is running. Samsung says not to unplug the dryer while dn is on the screen.

Jammed button codes

Samsung's bE and 6E mean a stuck button. Press each one firmly around its edges to free it.

Dashes on a Maytag

For a display of dashes, Maytag says breaker off for 5 minutes, then watch a timed dry for 5 minutes.

Freshly moved

Heat-pump models need rest after setup: Miele asks for at least an hour before the first program, and ASKO two hours before plugging in.

On the visit

What does the technician test first?

1

Your checks

The Honolulu visit starts with what you already tried: door, breakers, Control Lock. Have the model and serial number ready, as Whirlpool asks.

2

Door circuit

Latches and the door switch are tested. GE notes that a scorched or pushed-in switch alone is enough to stop a dryer from running.

3

Supply

With the power off, the cord and terminal block are inspected. Burned or frayed wires mean both parts are replaced, never just taped.

4

Controls

Panel and settings are checked last, then a full timed cycle runs so you see the dryer start, heat and finish in your own Honolulu home.

01

Dead dryer

The door may not be latched. Whirlpool notes some models have an upper and a lower latch that both must catch, and a towel corner in the seal can stop either one. Open it, clear the edge and press firmly until you feel it seat.
On most Whirlpool models, hold the Cycle Signal button for three seconds to release Control Lock.
Wet fingers are a common reason; Whirlpool says touch panels can misread them.
Some models will not. Choose a drying cycle first, then add the option.
Yes, Whirlpool and GE both expect a dedicated circuit, so before a Honolulu visit find out which breaker in the panel feeds the laundry and label it.
02

Power and safety

An electric dryer uses two, one per leg of its 240-volt supply, and a gas dryer uses one. Reset both on an electric model, fully off and then on.
Stop using it and switch off its breaker. GE says burned or frayed wires at the terminal block mean the block and the power cord are both replaced. NFPA counts electrical failure in 16 percent of home dryer fires, so this is not a wait-and-see problem in any Honolulu home.
Yes. It runs on one breaker, and on GE gas models the glo-bar igniter has to heat before the gas valve opens. No power means no tumble and no flame.
It tells the control the door is shut. GE says a scorched or pushed-in switch can stop the dryer from running at all, and replacing it is technician work.
The model and serial number, whether it is gas or electric, and which checks you already made: door, breakers, Control Lock. A Honolulu technician can then skip straight to the door switch, cord and control.
