Freezer not cold

Freezer not freezing? Check the ice cream first

Most ice cream turns soft at 3 F or warmer, so a scoopable carton is an early alarm even while meat still feels hard. Samsung ships its freezers set to -2 F. Here is how a Honolulu technician works out why yours is warmer.

The quick answer

Why is my freezer not freezing?

A freezer that will not freeze is most often stuck in a mode, overloaded, squeezed into too tight a space, or short of moving air inside. Read the display first: showroom or demo mode keeps the lights on with cooling disabled, and some units must be switched back on after an outage. Then think about the load. A big shop of unfrozen food can swamp it, which is why Whirlpool limits new food to 2 to 3 pounds per cubic foot at a time. Next come the room and the gaps around the cabinet. If the lights work but nothing gets cold, a control, relay, overload, wire or the compressor has failed.

Diagnosis

Four checks behind a warm freezer

1

Readings

We ask what the display shows and how full the freezer was. On the Honolulu visit, temperatures come from the food itself, not from a blast of air.

2

Startup

The compressor and fans are watched through a start. A click with no run, or a hum that quits, points toward the relay or overload.

3

Air and frost

The coil cover, the fan and the return path get checked next, because cold made at the coil still has to reach the food in a warm Honolulu kitchen.

4

Decision

A failed control, relay, overload or wire is replaced on the spot when the part is on hand. A compressor fault is weighed against the unit's age first.

01

Is it too warm?

Around 0 F, the figure ENERGY STAR gives for the freezer section.
It may be starting to, since most ice cream softens at 3 F or warmer while dense foods stay hard well above 0 F, so soft ice cream is the early warning worth acting on.
Some models come back with cooling switched off. Whirlpool notes that units may need turning back on after an outage, so read the display before calling. If cooling shows as on and the cabinet is still warm a few hours later, book a Honolulu visit.
That is Cooling Off mode. The lights and display keep working but the compressor will not cool until the mode is turned off, using the steps in the manual.
Whirlpool says 2 to 3 pounds of unfrozen food per cubic foot at a time. A big warehouse haul is best frozen over a few days, or the rest kept in the fridge until the first batch is hard.
02

Placement and repair

Yes, Whirlpool asks for 6 to 8 hours of pre-cooling before first use.
Often, if it has room to breathe. Whirlpool rates its upright freezers for rooms from 40 to 110 F and asks for 3 inches of space at the top and sides with 2 inches behind. Its full-size refrigerators need 55 to 110 F. A garage packed with boxes around the cabinet is the more common problem than the heat alone.
Long running alone is normal in a warm Honolulu room. Long running with soft food is not, and usually means air is not crossing a frosted coil or a fan has stopped.
GE lists the temperature control, the defrost control, the relay or guardette overload, open internal wiring and the compressor itself.
Weigh it with care. In 2020, 39 percent of Hawaii homes ran two or more refrigerators against 34 percent nationally, and a second unit that runs all year is where a residential rate of 48.00 cents per kWh in July 2026 hurts most. A small part on a newer freezer is usually worth it; a compressor on an old one often is not. A Honolulu technician can price both before any work.
