Sub-Zero freezers

Sub-Zero freezer repair for warm or frosted zones

Set a Sub-Zero freezer to 0 and find it more than 10 degrees warmer, and Sub-Zero says a condenser cleaning alone is unlikely to bring it back. Below that line, cleaning often does. We help Oahu owners work out which side they are on.

Four checks before you book a visit

1

Give it time

A newly installed freezer needs at least 24 hours to pull down. Any change to the setpoint earns the same 24 hours before you judge it.

2

Read the setpoint

Electronic panels ship at 00°. Older dial controls run from 1, the warmest, to 10, the coldest, and the maker suggests 4 to 6.

3

Measure it

The panel shows what you asked for, not what the air is. Stand a thermometer in a glass of vegetable oil mid-compartment and read it after 12 hours.

4

Clean or call

Under 10 degrees warm, a condenser cleaning may fix it, unless the unit is younger than 6 months. Over that, it needs a diagnosis.

Six things a Sub-Zero freezer shows or says

Some of these are built-in behavior and some point to a part. If the freezer simply will not hold cold, the general causes on our freezer not freezing page apply to every brand.

Double dashes

On Classic, 600 and 700 Series units, "--" means that zone was switched off, which the maker recommends while cleaning.

Wrench icon

This is a service indicator. Unlike a soft carton of ice cream, it is a signal worth acting on.

Frost on the bin

Defrost cycles leave a frost coat on the ice bin. Empty, rinse and dry it once or twice a month.

Sizzle or crackle

Water dripping onto the defrost heater during a normal defrost makes this sound. On its own it is not a fault.

A fan that whines

Open every door, then shut one section at a time. The one that brings the noise back points to its evaporator fan.

New-unit smell

A freshly installed freezer can smell new for many months. Spoiled-food odor after an outage is a different job.

Frost and ice

Why is frost building up inside my Sub-Zero freezer?

Frost in a Sub-Zero freezer usually means moist air is getting in or meltwater is not getting out. The maker's list starts with broken basket retainers on Classic and 600 Series units, then a frozen drain tube, door gaskets with tears or dry rot, and a drawer that keeps the door from closing. After fixing what you find, defrost it by hand and wait 24 hours. In a humid Oahu kitchen, a seal that leaks a little frosts fast. Frost that returns after all that belongs on our frost buildup page or a service call.

01

Temperature and settings

No, Sub-Zero says texture depends on the recipe and where the carton sits, so trust a thermometer instead.
It displays the setpoint you chose. For the air itself, use the oil-glass method in the steps above and wait the full 12 hours before reading.
No. On a unit younger than 6 months, Sub-Zero says condenser cleaning is not part of chasing a warm freezer. Check the setpoint, allow 24 hours and measure properly; a reading still off points to fans, controls or the sealed system.
Yes. The maker's steps are to clear any error codes, confirm both setpoints, and clean the condenser if it has gone 6 months without one.
Asking for a temperature warmer than the control allows can put some 700 Series units into a shutdown mode. The panel shows "--" and only the lights and door alarm keep working. Press Colder to bring it out.
02

Frost, ice and odor

With the unit off, hold that zone's Warmer key while pressing Power; the display then reads "--" until you repeat it.
Confirm the 0°F setting, defrost, and dry the floor completely. Then check that the door or drawer gasket seals and closes fully. Ice that reforms after that usually means a drain or seal fault.
Wash the drain pan, tubes, gaskets and crevices with warm water, dish soap and a capful of bleach, as Sub-Zero describes. Air the open unit with a fan for a few days. Then leave newspaper or charcoal briquettes inside and swap them daily until the odor fades.
Give it 24 hours, as the maker's frost checklist asks.
During a normal defrost, meltwater can drip onto the defrost heater and sizzle. It tends to come and go on a schedule. A grinding or steady whine is different and is worth tracing with the door-by-door fan test.
