Liebherr repair for German-built cold storage

In 1954 a bank manager told Hans Liebherr a refrigerator works was up for sale. He built his own plant in Ochsenhausen instead, and it still makes Liebherr fridges. We repair the brand's refrigerators and freezers around Oahu.

Where it came from

Why does a crane maker build refrigerators?

Because Hans Liebherr saw an open market. The group's first product was the TK 10 mobile tower crane of 1949, and refrigeration began as a side branch. Liebherr says only about one German household in ten owned a fridge at the time. A prototype came in 1954 and series production followed a year later. Today the refrigeration arm is run from Liebherr-Hausgeräte GmbH in Ochsenhausen and covers home, commercial, lab and medical units.

What R600a means for a Liebherr repair

Liebherr's US manuals warn that the R600a, or isobutane, inside the sealed circuit is flammable, and 70 of its 75 refrigerator entries in the ENERGY STAR data list it. A leak or compressor job on one of these is not the same as on an older fridge. Federal rules also say refrigerant may not be knowingly released during repair or scrapping, so an Oahu Liebherr headed for disposal still needs it recovered first.

Yes. The Liebherr group started with a mobile tower crane in 1949 and added refrigeration in 1954. The appliance side runs as its own segment from Ochsenhausen, covering home, commercial, lab and medical units.
Liebherr's US product pages claim the whole North American line meets or beats ENERGY STAR requirements. The ENERGY STAR data lists 75 Liebherr refrigerator and wine-cooler entries and 11 freezers, so the claim is easy to check against your own model number.
In 2011, about 5,702 built-in and about 8,000 freestanding 30 inch bottom-freezer models made by Liebherr-Hausgeraete Lienz GmbH in Austria, because a door could come off. The refrigerator page lists the model names and how to check yours.
Usually. Liebherr says it keeps essential spare parts for well over 10 years. Very old units can still be harder. Parts that are not held on the island have to ship to Oahu, so send a photo of the model plate first. With those numbers we check whether the part exists and how long it will take before anything is promised.

Owning one on Oahu

The type designation, the service number and the serial number, all on the model plate inside the cabinet.
Not after year 5. From year 6 through 12 only the sealed system parts stay covered, and the labor to fit them is the owner's cost.
The warning in Liebherr's US manuals concerns the refrigerant itself, which is flammable. It stays inside a sealed circuit in normal use, so the real risk is damage to that circuit, and that is why sealed system work on these units belongs with a technician.
