Refrigerator freezing food? Find the cold spot
Lettuce frozen at the back of the top shelf? On GE top-freezer models that is the coldest place in the cabinet. On many GE side-by-sides it is the left wall by the damper, and Samsung says produce and meat freeze first.

Why is my refrigerator freezing food?
Usually the control is set too cold, or food sits in the path of the coldest air. Whirlpool aims for 37 to 40 degrees F in the fresh-food section and warns that at 34 or below, food near the air outlets can freeze. Watery food goes first, such as produce and meat against the back wall, on the lowest shelf or facing a vent. Warm both controls one step. Move food and door bins away from the freezer vents, and switch off Power Cool if it is on. An ice maker left running with no water line also overcools the fresh-food side, and so does frost on the rear vents. Freezing that continues after that is a technician job.
Fresh-food targets and cold spots, by maker
The makers set slightly different targets and name different cold spots. Check food on the shelf your Honolulu fridge's maker calls coldest.
| Source | Fresh-food target | Freezing starts | Coldest spot | Freezer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | 37 to 40 F | At 34 F or below | Near the air outlets | Not stated there |
| GE | 37 to 42 F, set at 37 | Not stated there | Left wall by the damper on many side-by-sides; back of the top shelf on top-freezers | 0 F |

What is overcooling your fridge?
| Cause | How you can tell | Owner check or technician job |
|---|---|---|
| Setting too cold | Freezing in several places, not just one shelf | Owner check: warm both controls one step |
| Food in the cold air path | Items at the back wall, on the lowest shelf or facing a vent freeze first | Owner check: move them, and set door bins one notch away from the freezer vents |
| Power Cool left on | The fast-cool mode shows on the display | Owner check: switch it off |
| Ice maker on, no water line | Ice maker switched on with no supply connected | Owner check: turn the ice maker off |
| Frosted rear vents | Frost on the vents at the back of the fresh-food section | Owner check: clear the frost; if it returns, book a technician |
| Control or air path fault | Still freezing after every step above | Technician job |
A fridge that freezes the lettuce is still cooling, so this is rarely an emergency. We would rather you try the dial, the vents, Power Cool and the ice maker switch first, and call us only when the freezing carries on.
From frozen lettuce back to a steady chill
Readings
Food is checked on several shelves, not the air, and the display is read for settings and modes. In a Honolulu condo or house the routine is the same.
Air path
Rear vents are checked for frost, food is moved off the outlets, door bins are reset, and the ice maker's water supply is confirmed.
Controls
If the owner fixes did not help, the Honolulu technician tests the temperature control, its sensor and the damper that meters cold air.
Settle
After the repair the cabinet is given time to settle, and the shelves your Honolulu household found frozen are rechecked before sign-off.
