True refrigerator repair for the home line

This page covers True Residential, the home line True adapted from its commercial refrigeration in 2008, not reach-ins or bar coolers. Its warranty has a travel clause for places reachable only by plane or boat. We repair True home units across Oahu.

Island clause

Does True's warranty treat an island home differently?

It can. True's warranty excludes travel time and costs to isolated locations. It defines those as places beyond a 50-mile radius of a service agent, more than two hours away each way, or reachable only by plane, train, boat or ferry. In those cases True pays to ship parts and standard labor time only. Whether an Oahu address counts depends on where the nearest agent sits. Ask before a claim, and keep the paperwork, so travel charges never come as a surprise.

Condenser care

Cleaning a True condenser the way True asks

1

Inspect

Check the coil every six months, or sooner if it looks dusty. Open the rainshield to see it.

2

Brush

Brush the dirt off with a stiff brush, working along the fins and never across them.

3

Vacuum

Vacuum around the condensing unit. Never hose it down or pressure-wash it, however grimy it looks.

4

Budget

A service call made only to clean the coil is not covered by True's warranty, so this job is worth doing yourself.

01

True the company

No. It covers True Residential, the home line. Commercial True units such as reach-ins, glass door merchandisers and bar coolers have their own manuals and terms, so tell us which kind you have when you call.
In 2008, when it adapted its commercial line for the home. The company itself dates to 1945, when Bob Trulaske and his father Frank began in St. Louis and built a 40 cu ft upright freezer. 7UP bought True roll-top bottle coolers in 1948, and the GDM-40-30 glass door model followed in 1957. True now markets its home units as built in the USA, from headquarters in O'Fallon, Missouri.
On a refrigerator column it is on the left wall by the top drawer. A freezer has it on the left wall beside the wire basket, and a dual-zone unit high on the left wall.
Because a GFCI may interrupt operation. True asks for a 115V, 60Hz supply on a 15 amp breaker with a 3-prong grounded outlet.
No. True says the columns are not for outdoor use and are tested to Climate Class 5, 104°F at 40 percent humidity. Hotter conditions may cut performance.

Install and coverage

A 1/4-inch PEX line, since True does not recommend copper, delivering 30 to 100 psi and 0.5 gpm. Incoming water should be between 33 and 100°F. A column that makes little ice on a line outside those numbers needs the supply fixed first, before any part inside is blamed.
Quaternary-salt cleaners and hydrochloric (muriatic) acid are on True's avoid list. Choose alkaline, alkaline-chlorinated or chloride-free cleaners, scrub with the grain, and rinse any chlorinated cleaner off right away. On an island where salt already settles on metal, that routine matters.
No, damage from surges, high or low voltage and power failure is excluded.
Yes. The unit must have shipped after February 1, 2017 and be registered within 12 months of install. Seconds, ADA models and clear ice machines are left out regardless.
With one anti-tip bracket, which True's column install manual lists as a requirement.
