Viking appliance repair, range to refrigerator

Viking credits founder Fred Carl Jr. with bringing the first commercial-style range made for home kitchens to market in 1987. The name has since spread to fridges, wall ovens and dishwashers. We fix all of them on Oahu.

Rust spots on Viking stainless near the ocean

Viking admits it plainly. Outdoor units in very salty conditions can show light surface rust on their stainless parts. The maker's fix is Soft Scrub gel on a damp sponge, rubbed with the grain rather than across it, and a cover kept on the grill between uses. On a windward or leeward lanai that advice matters. Indoor kitchens see less, but a range by an open slider still gets the trade winds. When rust is more than a surface film, or it sits around a burner or a hinge, we look at it during the repair visit.

Build date

How old is my Viking?

The serial number tells you. Its first six digits are the build date, written month, then day, then year. So a serial that opens with 082421 came off the line on August 24, 2021. That date matters for more than curiosity. If the receipt is gone, Viking uses the production date in the serial to start the warranty clock. It also tells you whether a unit falls inside a recall's build window, which is how most Viking recalls are defined.

The brand

CPSC records name The Middleby Corporation of Elgin, Illinois, as the parent firm. The footer on vikingrange.com describes Viking Range, LLC as part of the Composition Brands luxury portfolio.
Most Viking products are, according to the company's own FAQ, and its listed address is 111 Front Street in Greenwood. Fred Carl moved production there from contract plants by 1989. Greenwood was his hometown, and part of the reason was to bring jobs back to an area hit by the decline of cotton farming.
The 3 Series is made of 30 inch units for smaller kitchens. The 5 Series is the classic Viking look, sold in 18 colors. The 7 Series is built around burners adapted from the commercial line. Two more families sit outside the numbers: RVL, in black glass meant to sit flush with cabinets, and the Italian-styled Tuscany ranges.
Only when the appliance changes hands as part of a home sale.
Partly. A Residential Plus clause gives 90 days of full coverage in places like bed and breakfasts, fire stations, churches and condo common areas. Restaurant use and other commercial kitchens are excluded altogether.

Coverage and recalls

No, its warranty lists power loss and natural disasters among the exclusions.
Viking and Middleby agreed to pay a civil penalty to settle charges that Viking was too slow to report the range defect behind its 2015 recall. CPSC counted 170 incident reports between 2008 and 2014. The settlement is not an admission of the charges.
Ranges in 2015 and 2022, dishwashers in 2012 and 2015, and built-in refrigerators in 2009 and 2013. Each one is broken down on our range, dishwasher and refrigerator pages.
Yes, the terms cover products bought in the US and Canada, and Hawaii is part of the US.
The model and serial label, or a clear photo of it, plus the series if you know it. Tell us gas or electric, and whether a range runs on utility gas or a propane tank. Describe what the unit did just before the fault, and note any recall letter you have received. With that in hand the first visit can be spent fixing, not identifying.
