Is my Amana fridge running too much?

Maybe not. Amana says the motor normally runs about 40% to 80% of the time in an average room, and longer when the room is warm. Most Oahu homes have no central air, so the high end is common here. Doors opened often, a big load of warm groceries, or a fresh install all add hours; give a new unit 24 hours before you judge the freezer. What is not normal is a cabinet that stays warm while the motor never stops, and that is worth a diagnosis.

Amana publishes simple owner checks, and several no-cooling calls end at one of them. We start there so you are not paying for parts a dial would fix. Then we look at the coils: Amana says most homes rarely need them cleaned, but greasy kitchens, dust or heavy pet traffic call for every 2 to 3 months, and some models are not meant to be opened by owners at all. After that comes the sealed system, fans and controls.

Cooling and controls

On the back wall of the freezer compartment.
Amana says to turn it only for a short boost to one section, then return it to Recommended, because the fridge runs at its best efficiency there.
They are probably sitting in the stream of cold air that enters from the freezer. Amana warns that items placed in that path can freeze, so move eggs and drinks away from the vent opening and check the settings sit near 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.
Check for Demo or Showroom mode first. Stores use it to show features without cooling, and it has to be switched off for home use; the steps vary by model.
When cubes are not fully frozen at harvest, the fingers lift icy water onto the stripper, and it freezes there into a bridge. That bridge jams the fingers on the next cycle. Clear it gently with a plastic utensil, never a metal one, which can damage the ice maker.

Ice, energy and recalls

Unplug the refrigerator for one minute, then plug it back in.
ENERGY STAR lists the 19.3 cubic foot top-freezer ARTX2419S at 379 kWh a year without an automatic ice maker and 463 kWh with one. The smaller ARTX2314T rises from 336 to 420. With Oahu electricity at about 2.6 times the U.S. average, that difference shows on the bill.
