KitchenAid refrigerator repair, crisper to ice bin

Many KitchenAid crispers hold a Produce Preserver, a cartridge that soaks up ethylene, the gas that ripens fruit. KitchenAid claims up to 25 percent longer freshness from it. We repair KitchenAid fridges and ice makers on Oahu, and we check the small things first.

Air filter icon

What do the KitchenAid air filter colors mean?

Blue means the filter is fine, yellow means order one, red means replace it, and flashing red means it has expired. That icon belongs to the Freshflow air filter, which sits on the rear wall of the fresh food section. KitchenAid rates it 15 times more effective than baking soda on food odors. If odors outlast a fresh filter, the source is somewhere else in the cabinet and worth tracking down.

Care calendar

KitchenAid's own schedule for a full-size fridge

KitchenAid publishes a maintenance calendar for its full-size refrigerators. Most items are owner jobs; a few are worth a visit if they keep slipping.

How a KitchenAid fridge call usually goes

1

Read the tag

The model and serial sit inside the fresh food section: left wall on French door, bottom-freezer and four-door models, right wall on a side-by-side.

2

Check settings

We compare both sections against KitchenAid's targets before touching a part, since a control set too warm looks like a failure.

3

Date filters

Water filter, air filter and preserver all run on six-month clocks. An overdue one can explain weak flow or odors.

4

Fix and explain

If a part has failed, we explain the repair and the cost first, then fix it with your go-ahead.

Ice and temperatures

KitchenAid asks for 0 to 5°F in the freezer and 37 to 40°F on the fresh food side, with at least 24 hours between control changes.
Look at the bottom hinge of the freezer door. KitchenAid says the dispenser tube and a wiring connection pass through there, and on a fresh install either one can be left loose or unplugged. If both look right and the freezer is in range, the water supply and the ice maker itself are next.
Press and hold the AIR FILTER button for 3 seconds after fitting the new filter.
Watch the indicator. When it has turned fully from white to red, or six months have passed, change the packets. Past that point, the slower ripening KitchenAid claims for it no longer applies.
Usually not. KitchenAid says a normal home rarely needs it, but pets, heavy foot traffic or construction dust call for a look every 3 to 6 months, using its coil brush, part 4210463RW. Some models leave the coils to a technician.

Filters and upkeep

The KRFC136SP family is listed at 563 kWh a year, under its 616 kWh federal limit. Island power costs more than the mainland average, so a fridge running well past its listing shows up on the bill faster here. Our refrigerator not cooling page covers the warning signs.
It can. KitchenAid lists 30 to 120 psi at the connection, with 40 to 80 psi working best, and 40 to 60 psi at the inlet valve on a reverse osmosis system. Feed it with 1/4 inch outside-diameter copper or PEX, coiled into a service loop so the fridge can roll out.
Check the fresh food setting first; it should sit between 37 and 40°F. An ice maker left switched on with no water line can also do it, along with a buzzing sound and an over-cold freezer. If neither applies, our refrigerator too cold page lists the parts that cause it.
Yes. Built-in side-by-sides such as the KBSD748S family are common in larger kitchens, and our condo appliance repair page explains how building rules shape a visit.
It depends on the part, the age and what a replacement costs on the island; our repair or replace guide lays it out.
